Az-Zagal is a refuge in the heart of Alto Alentejo, located in an old manor house in the village of Casa Branca, in Sousel. The name Az-Zagal refers to Quinta do Zagalo, an ancient 15th-century agricultural property in the region. Zagalo is one of several Portuguese words whose origin attests to Arab influence in the country, especially in the Alentejo. In name and architectural features, Casa Az-Zagal incorporates and pays homage to the Arab heritage and the spirit of hospitality that it left preserved forever in Alentejo culture.
